All-Ceramic Crowns

Rendering of jaw with dental crownAt Bagley Dental, we offer some restorative treatments to keep your teeth healthy, beautiful, and strong. Once such treatment, a dental crown, is used to cover and strengthen a damaged tooth while improving its overall appearance. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is permanently cemented to a tooth. We specialize in all-ceramic crowns because we want our patients to experience their many benefits!

Types of Crowns

There are four major types of dental crowns:
•  All-ceramic crowns - This type of crown is fabricated using a porcelain-based material and is best suited for restoring teeth in your visible smile. However, recent advancements have led to their use for posterior teeth as well.
•  Porcelain-fused to metal - This crown is extremely durable and provides a stronger bond than regular porcelain. Unfortunately, the metal framework can show through the material.
•  Metal-alloys - This crown, typically a silver composite, is highly resistant to corrosion, making it one of the most durable options. It also can be fit onto a tooth with a minimal amount of healthy enamel.
•  Gold alloy - Although less common these days, gold crowns can be extremely reliable. It does not fracture or wear away the enamel, unlike other options.

Crown Procedure

During an initial consultation visit, J. Andrew Bagley DDS or W. Ryan Bagley DDS will perform a comprehensive exam to determine if an all-ceramic crown is right for you. If there is a risk of infection or injury to the tooth’s pulp, we may recommend root canal treatment first.

During the procedure, we will numb the tooth and surrounding gum tissue using a local anesthetic. Next, the tooth will be completely reshaped to accommodate the crown. This involves shaving off a large portion of the enamel. Once the tooth is properly reshaped, we will make a molded impression. This impression will be sent to our dental laboratory, where they will fabricate your final crown. This process may take several weeks. In the meantime, we will provide you with a temporary crown. Your temporary will shield the tooth from the forces of your bite.

Once your restoration is complete, we can schedule your final appointment. During this appointment, we will remove your temporary and check the margins on your new crown. We may need to make some minor adjustments before we permanently cement the crown into place.

Benefits of All-Ceramic Crowns

We push for all-ceramic crowns because of their many benefits, some of which include:
•  Aesthetics - All-ceramic crowns mimic the color, texture, and light reflective properties of natural tooth enamel. This means they will blend in with your existing teeth to create a beautiful, full smile.
•  Biocompatible material - Ceramic is a biocompatible material that gum tissue tolerates extremely well. There is also no risk of allergic reaction, and limited risk for sensitivity with hot and cold temperatures while eating and drinking.
•  Durable - Recent technological advancements have led to an improvement in the durability of all-ceramic crowns. Under the proper care, a ceramic crown will last for decades or even a lifetime.
